Profile:

Susan-Jane is a graduate of Auckland University and Nottingham University. She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the high court of New Zealand in 1982, and as a solicitor of the High Court of England and Wales in 1987. Prefering to be known as S-J, she is the head of EMA Legal and manages the legal teams for both EMA Central and EMA Northern.

She offers high level strategic legal advice to employers on change management and transactional issues, and is a tenacious and effective advocate with a proven track record. She acted for Business New Zealand in the leading case of Gibbs v Crest Commercial Cleaning Ltd (Employment Court) which resulted in the 2006 Amendment Act to the Employment Relations Act 2000 which made changes to the vulnerable workers employment protection. She represents employers in litigation to counter industrial action.

S-J has more than 25 years’ experience as a barrister and solicitor in private practice, including as a senior employment lawyer for two top European law firms, Eversheds and Hammonds, both based in London, where she acted for large household name corporates and global corporations such as National Grid Transco, the Palm Corporation and Universal Music International. She has also worked in-house for large corporations, including IBM (UK) Ltd and Lion Nathan in NZ.
