John has a Business Studies degree from Massey University majoring in Industrial Relations and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Dispute Resolution) with a specialization in mediation.

John commenced his career spending over four years with the then Auckland Provincial Employers Association. He began on the information line, but spent the majority of his time in advocacy services. He was involved in providing assistance in a variety of areas including: recruitment assistance; delivery of training; disciplinary and dismissal situations; innumerable personal grievance meetings; collective wage negotiations at a local and national level; and strike resolution.

Since that time John has held a number of line management roles in retail and service businesses. He has developed a strong appreciation of the issues that are inherent in those organizations and the impact of employment relationship problems at the workplace level.
